  • never tell employers you are 'staying at home' when on annual leave. always tell them you are going away. Far away.

The event is the company owner visiting to inspect Christmas stock.

I was being ambiguous for anonymity but feel that is already out the window.

Is the day they want you to come in important enough to you to risk losing your job by insisting on your holiday?

    On principle, yes.

In practice, would you be able to cancel you plan without too much damage? If so, how would you feel negotiating to have two days off for the price of one if you came in on the last day of your hols?

I only get paid for 3 days of my 7 days off. Money isn't the object, I get taxed to hell and pay a significant portion of my monthly wages in child benefit leaving me on the borderline of "just able to function as a human being".

I have been offered to shift the holiday one day earlier, from Sunday to Saturday, but this involves losing my requested day off on the previous Saturday, which is imperitive to me, as it involves spending time with individuals I barely ever see, and may be the last chance to spend time with them before they return home after university.

Call me silly, or anything you want, but this week off is important to me on principle, and for my social life. The partner and I have both been suffering from social anxiety to the point where I have blacked out twice and she has been having emotional breakdowns.. In our opinion we NEED this week off to try and feel human. Sorry for the likely unnecessary info, but we value this week off higher than we currently value our position of employment, and feel daft for having been put in this position in the first place.

my contract is significantly lower than the amount I work on a day to day basis.

I only get paid holiday pay based on my contract.

Essentially I pay around £100 to have a week off ^^

it is probably the most important thing you can do at the moment.
you ain't going to get union membership before the holiday..But you are maybe going to have someone ask you to cancel your holidays.

If you know your rights ..Then you can hold your ground confidently ..You won't need to argue as you are right and regardless of how put out your line managers appear ..They will know they are over reaching and are powerless.
So my advice ..Read carefully ..Come back here with any confusing bits and, if any of us ask for more clarification ..You have something to quote from :)

    Speak to you tomorrow

I'm confused, if you work 5days a week why are you only paid holiday for 3 days and not the full weeks worth of 5
