How do I get Sky to remove me from their mailing list?

I'm moving from my rented flat and want to ensure that all post sent with my name on it is cancelled. For some reason I get "deals/offers" from both Sky and BT addressed to me, even though I never gave them my name and have never had any of their products at my current address or any past addresses.

I tried the Sky live chat (the BT live chat always seems to say it's unavailable?), but the person asked if I wanted to change the address on my account (don't have one), then asked for my Sky account number (don't have one), then told me I would no longer get letters in my name (but I hadn't given her my address yet, just my name, which isn't that unusual so it's unlikely she could stop the letters with just that!). I asked if she had removed me from the database and did she need my address and the reply I got was "I've already helped you"! Basically the whole conversation was a confused series of "script" answers followed by her getting annoyed haha

Surely it can't be that strange of a request?

Would I be better off writing them a letter or email? I will ring them if necessary, but was hoping to get a written confirmation.

Since Sky And BT have never had your custom, your marketing is coming addressed to you specifically from details obtained from the electoral role etc.

Thanks, yes of course, should be easy enough to remove myself from their databases, after all I never got any post from Sky/BT addressed to any of the past tenants (although I got other important looking post for several months from the last tenant, so she didn't seem the type to bother removing herself from trivial mailing lists) - in fact maybe that means they do it automatically? Once the electoral roll changes they will change my name to the new person on their mailing list?

Assuming they got your details off the electoral roll, you could have stopped this by not going on the open electoral register.

Have you tried writing return to sender on it in large letters & putting it back in the post?

Yes, should have! Didn't think at the time

Been registered on the electoral roll at my "new" address for years as it's actually my "old" address (I've been registered 2 places while I've been a student) and never received anything from BT/Sky as all addressed to other family member (who actually has an account with both), so hopefully this won't happen :)

Ironically I haven't had anything from them in a while and they've all gone in the bin - silly me, not very forward planning! Will do this if I get anything before I move though.

Got a reply from BT to the email I sent them yesterday about this (included my postal address in the message). It says:

"Thank you for the email you sent regarding the reception of emails. I have checked the details and I see the email address is not updated in the records. Therefore you will not be getting emails from BT"

Eh? Seriously! You've got to laugh or you'd cry :)
