Got meter readings but no bill, do I have to estimate?

Options
We moved house 3 months ago and our new home is supplied by EON. I gave them meter readings the day we moved in and set up our account because we had to. However I now want to see if we can get a better deal somewhere else. We have not had our first bill yet (though in my online account it says quarterly bills so should have one soon) but I do have meter readings from when we moved in July 4th and today Oct 6th. I'm not good at this stuff. Is the difference between these readings the kWh's for the quarter? If not, can it be worked out or am I better off waiting for the bill? Wanted to knuckle down and get this sorted today but as usual it is never that simple.

Thanks in advance everyone.

Kathryn

Its the difference between the two readings .

But bear in mind usage is lower in the summer months .
If you base your years consumption on those readings they will not be true .

The key is the tariff standing charge and Kwh charge .
Results based upon part information usually start with a low DD then the DD has to go up with increased winter usage .
Any Fixed tariff has the unit price fixed but not the consumption / usage costs .

The difference in reading for electric will be ok but the gas meter will be in Cu metres or 100's cu Ft, not Kwh.I would wait for the bill if I were you.

If your deal is Qtly bills and one is due, report your today readings to your online account - (If Eon don't send in a meter reader, they will produce an Estimated bill, which is next to useless when trying to guage your annual use )

Have you looked at a comparison site yet?
(without visiting one, the issues you currently portray will be miniscule in comparison to those you will meet in attempting to find the best deal)

If you have visited a comparison site, you should have noticed most (all?) offer you the ability to compare even if you don't know your annual usage.

(It won't be as accurate as knowing your annual figures, but you won't know them for sure until you have lived at the property a year under typical conditions, and it's certainly better than attempting to find the best deal without looking at a comparison site.)
  • I am not sure how to get accurate bill estimates if we only have summer figures. I checked the meter today because we have just started to use the heating (mostly just to make sure it is all ok and to keep the bathroom warm) so we had an idea of summer versus winter usage. Any ideas on how I can know whether it is worth switching or not? Should I wait another 3 months and then look? We are currently paying £120 a month DD. I had the option of setting it lower but wanted to make sure it didn't go up in the winter catching us off guard.
No I haven't used comparison sites yet, I got as far as "I know how much I spend" "I know how much I use" "I have no freaking clue!" ;-)

All you are going to be able to do without a track record is "guess", which isn't a very scientific method of seeing if you can save money by moving your supply elsewhere.

If it were me, I'd move to Eons 1 year fixed version 10, which is just out and offering competitive prices amongst the big players. You might save a few quid moving elsewhere, but realistically, that's all it will be.

Give eon a call, ask them to switch you to the V10 tariff, provide them with readings, get an up to date bill and monitor your consumption going forward. If you open an online account with eon you can enter monthly readings and even get a monthly bill if you wish.

The basics are what are you paying on your current tariff .
Standing Charge and per Kwh charge for both fuels .
Find another supplier via a comparison site and look at the costs on their tariff .
Comparison sites can work on average use find the lowest company and then look at the tariff .

My guess would be that you are currently on EONs standard (highest tariff )

    Hi Kathryn

Hope you've settled into your new home.

Thought I'd pop on and let you know that, as you've registered with our website, you can produce your own bill online by putting in your meter readings.

As you gave us readings when you moved in, by popping in the latest readings, you'll see an accurate picture of how much you've used so far.

Doesn't give you an annual figure, I know, but the bill will also tell you the Standing Charges and unit prices.

As others have said, this'll help you compare your present prices with other tariffs. Both with us and with the other suppliers.

Now you've registered online, you can also use the 'Direct Debit Manager' on our website. This gives you more control over the monthly payments and comes in handy should circumstances change.

Provided the account is billed up to the latest meter readings, you can change payments by up to 20 per cent up or down. By up to 5 per cent up or down without readings.

Before confirming, we'll let you know by how much we anticipate the account will be in credit/debit if the change is put through but usage doesn't alter accordingly.

Could be particularly helpful here as you build up a picture of your ongoing usage.

    Hope this helps Kathryn.
