UKPC Fine help

Hi, I recently moved to a new area and on Saturday parked in a layby outside the parade of local shops to get my hair cut and pop into the news agent. When I returned to my car I was suprised to find a parking notice, demanding £100 or £60 if paid within 14 days.
I immediately starting looking around for a sign that I wasn't allowed to park there (other cars were parked and coming and going) and I did not see any road markings or signs on posts. After scanning the area for about another 20 seconds or so, I noticed a sign on the wall of one of the shops in the parade with a UKPC parking notice saying it free to park but for a maximum of 20 minutes (I was about 30 mins)
Obviously I had no idea and in my opinion the signage is not fairly displayed, as I had not noticed it at all - and the price at £100 is ridiculous, especially considering I was there using the shops and supporting the local trade and there is very little parking in the area.
Where do I stand? Should I appeal this right away or just ignore it?
Part of me was tempted to just pay the fine and learn a hard lesson for it, but the other part of me thinks that to fine someone £100 for unknowingly parking somewhere is disgusting.
Would appreciate any advice on what I should do next.
Many thanks

Read the NEWBIES sticky thread. EVERYTHING you need to know is in there.
It is NOT A FINE!

Hi Many thanks did have a read of that, but still wasn't completely sure.
Should I be beggining an appeal right away or should I wait until I have received a notice in the post?
I received a notice left on my windscreen at the time from UKPC0 -
you should be waiting for the NTK as it clearly states in post #1 of the NEWBIES sticky thread, unless its a hire/lease/company vehicle which is also covered in that first post
you also need pictures of the signage etc too
and as stated, its not a fine, no idea why you thought that as its a private parking ticket invoice0 -
Ok, thanks I will wait until something turns up in the post then, and contest after that.0

Please do not be tempted to pay this scam charge and give the owner of this bullying outfit any more money than he already has amassed for doing nothing apart from laughing at the motorist!0

Hmmmm... most newbies read the Newbies thread then easily achieve these outcomes v UKPC:

...the usual result is an immediate cancellation letter as soon as they see the template appeal - no need even for POPLA usually. And you were thinking of PAYING a firm that folds & ends the scam after one letter?! Read the linked examples there. You won't be paying now will you? UKPC are among the easiest to beat, soon you will be the proud owner of a letter saying 'oooops we made an admin error so we have cancelled it as a goodwill gesture' (after you appeal to the first Notice to keeper letter).PRIVATE 'PCN'? DON'T PAY BUT DON'T IGNORE IT (except N.Ireland).

Hi there, Thanks for all the replies!
No, I have decided I will fight it and not pay out of principle. The only thing is I am out of the country for 3 weeks from tonight, so will have to wait and see if they send anything in the post while while I'm away and will challenge it using the template as mentioned upon my return. I presume challenging it this late shouldn't be an too much of an issue? The timing if my trip doesn't help.0 -
As there has been a windscreen ticket (on 4th Oct) the earliest they can send the NtK is 26th Oct, so arriving with you maybe 27th at the earliest. (NtK comes 29-56 days after a windscreen notice). The keeper then has 28 days to lodge an appeal.
So don't worry about being away - you'll likely be back before any NtK lands.
