Golf estate 1.6 or 2.0? Help
I currently drive a golf estate 1.6 manual and it's due to be replaced (company car). It's mpg was stated at 67.3 but with my real world driving I get 60mpg from it.
I drive 33000 miles a year with 80% of that on motorways at about 60-70 mph.
I am wanting to take either the 1.6 automatic or the 2.0 automatic but am unsure whether the 2.0 engine will perform better in terms of fuel efficiency given the amount of motorway driving I do.
Advice please. Thanks

Looks as if you will be about 10% down with the 2.0 but that needs to be offset by the other factors such which is more relaxing/better to drive.

What Car summary:-
The Golf is a superb all-rounder that offers everything most families will ever need. However, you still need to choose reasonably carefully.
Most versions are sensational to drive, blending an extremely comfortable ride with good body control. However, the cheaper versions (both 1.2 petrols and the 1.6 diesel) come with less sophisticated rear suspension, and they don’t ride quite as serenely. They’re still more comfortable than many rivals, though.
The 121bhp 1.4-litre petrol is our favourite engine because it's strong, quiet and economical. If you do lots of miles, though, the punchy and smooth 2.0-litre diesel is an excellent choice.
Of the trims, we reckon SE strikes the best balance between equipment and price. This brings alloy wheels, automatic lights and wipers, smarter interior trim than on cheaper versions, adaptive cruise control and a City Emergency Braking system.0 -
FWIW I have the Golf GT 2.0d Bluemotion (manual, and not estate). I do a mix of town and motorway driving. My average economy over 29k miles is 51.5 mpg.
Where my usage has mainly been motorway the economy has been between 58 and 61 mpg.
(The "book" figure for my vehicle is about 62 mpg).0 -

I've a 2012 mk6 Golf 1.6 TDI and with mostly long runs i'm getting 66.5mpg brim to brim over 25,000 miles a year.
Of interest i recently have had a 2014 mk7 1.6 TDI SE bluemotion and surprisingly it turned out to be approx 5mpg LESS economical. I would put this down to the mk7 being a heaver car and the engine struggling a little more with the weight.
I personally found the mk7 1.6 TDI to feel a little underpowered and i dont think adding an auto box would help this.
My recommendation would be the 2.0, BUT i think, as above you will see economy drop with it.0 -
Just to add to my earlier reply ... mine is the 140PS model (so quite pokey). The economy is much better than the Astra 1.7TDi SRi 100PS estate I had previously.0

I think you're safe there as it doesn't exist.
Mincing along the motorway would have the 1.6 if it offers better economy.0 -

Who is paying the bills?
Test drive both and pick the one with the better feel.
even if you are paying the fuels costs will not out way the comfort levels of a better spec.
are these the only options
In the VAG stable there are better cars if the allowance gives the options.0 -
