  • Unfortunately exercise is a no good for me - fibromyalgia and associated fatigue hinder all but the most gentle of movements.

Can you swim? Even walking around in the water can help :)

Check with your GP first, but I'm sure swimming can help. I've lost 2 stone this year by increasing my control of portion sizes and increasing exercise levels.
  • Make ONE small change at a time and only one. Stick with it until it becomes a habit (this will take weeks, rather than days), and only then make another small change.

I've read that the human brain does better with positive statements rather than negative ones. So instead of saying "Today I won't eat any chocolate", make a positive statement like "Today I will eat two vegetables at dinner". I've no personal experience of this one, just something I read.

Re the eating till you're stuffed: try to make a decision about how much to eat in advance, serve some up on a plate, eat it and do not go back for seconds. And then pay attention: how long until you feel hungry again? If you feel hungry after two hours, then your portion wasn't big enough. If you're not hungry again for many hours, then maybe the portion was too big. Adjust next time.

Ask the DRS about Metformin for your PCOS, it helped me lose over 2 stones, because it levels out your insulin level and stops the uptake of various sugars.
If the DR doesnt know what they are on about then asked to be referred to Endocrinology at the local hospital. They will know about PCOS and how to treat it and help you.
The only thing with metformin is the side effects, it can make you sick and have tummy upsets. Also some people have ended up too thin on it because it really stops your appetite. People end up not wanting much.
It also stops sugar cravings, dead. Its the only thing thats ever helped me lose weight. Obviouly you need to eat sensibly and do exercize as well, but studies have shown that it helps people more than just diet and exercize alone in terms of weight loss.

I cut out sugar from tea and coffee and lost 12lbs in one month
  • Choose one thing at a time, and make that change.
Make them small changes - so you might start by just deciding that this week you'll only have 1 takeaway. Gradual changes are easier to stick to and won't overwhelm you.
Things that have helped me are: eating more fruit and veg, making more effort to cook, and moving about more.
I understand exercise might be difficult given your condition, but anything extra will help.

Regarding cooking, I would cook easy, one pot dishes that are simple to double up. A fridge/freezer full of leftovers makes for a lovely easy life. For example, yesterday I made carrot soup and some savoury muffins. That's me sorted for lunch for the rest of the week.

I'd re-think the takeaways. Scrambled eggs on toast or something similar is going to be better for your weight (and your purse) than a kebab, and will probably be quicker!

Personally I have been happier since I stopped focusing just on my weight, and started concentrating on looking after myself. The carrot soup is delicious, it just also happens to be lower in calories. That switch in mindset makes it much easier to do.

Thank you so much for all of your replies. I shall try and provide some answers to some questions raised.

Swimming - yes! Love it! I started going regularly before I went on hols in the summer but cannot go as much now due to husband's shifts and not having a built in babysitter (my eldest has just moved out for uni)! Again though, I have always been an all or nothing sort so I feel like now I can't go 'regularly', there's not much point at all but of course I realise anything is better than nothing!

Metformin - I tried this years ago but is made me ibs worse and not a lot else!!

I don't have sugar in my coffee - at work I have black out of the machine and one individual creamer which is about 20 calories.

Littlegreenparrot and cherryblossom - that is kind of my way of thinking! I think I might post on here my progress in a diary way.

My aims for this week are to drink water instead of the diet coke/pepsi max I have been drinking recently. I never used to drink this but since doing sw again (as it's 'free'), seem to be hooked!

My other aim is to include fruit/veg at every meal and try and have this for snacks.

I am also going to aim to get active for 10 mins at least three times this week. I know that doesn't seem much but for someone who recently had to lay down after taking a shower, it's a start!!

I have also taken a pic of everything that has passed my mouth!! A form of pictorial food diary. That might give me an eye opener in a week when I aim to look at it properly!

I know I have mentioned 3 changes plus the food pics but they are quite small so hopefully I should be successful with them.

Lgp - can I have your savoury muffin recipe please? Sounds yum!

Thank you all again for taking the time to post. I really appreciate it.
  • Of course, they are yum :)

I make the courgette version, usually freeze them, and if taken out at breakfast they're good to go for lunch. Mostly have them with soup, also good split up with loads of cream cheese.

This is my on going project, I recently discovered that if I don't drink milk my skin is noticeably much better. Smoother, brighter, fewer spots and bumps. For now I'm investigating milk substitutes and getting used to that. To not have butter, cream cheese, yoghurt seems impossible, - and would make these muffins off limits. So for now it's just milk. Like I said, small steps!

Another little trick is apparently stomachs are slow to send an 'i'm full' message - but if you drink a glass or two of water a bit before eating this helps fill your stomach up.

Well, not a bad day. I had feta salad for lunch which was yum and some satsumas but ended up on the loo 4 times (sorry!). That was within a 5 hr shift at work. I am not sure if it is the oranges that did it or the red onion on the salad. Am off work tomorrow so will try the oranges again and see how I get on in the safety of my own home!!

I also had a tin of heinz tomato soup as a 'snack' when I got home from work. I figured 3 cookies (which I might have with a cuppa) or something similar was not much less calorie wise and soup was more filling.

I went out for an impromptu meal with my friends and had a bit of a naughty dish but I opted for no starter and had salad with only a couple of chips to taste. I also ate slowly and left some!!

Some positive choices in there and will aim to build on them day by day.
