Out of interest - would this SSD be compatible with this laptop?

EDIT - scrap that, according to the Crucial website, the laptop isn't compatible once I did their scan

    yes, why not?
A SATA SSD can be installed on virtually any laptop supporting SATA connection (opposite to IDE).
The fact that this particular laptop supports only SATAII (SATA2) rather than SATAIII (SATA3) means you won't benefit from the top speed the SSD can deliver but still.. probably 4 times faster than a traditional HDD... at least...

What you can do is losing DVD drive.
Replace existing HDD with 120GB/ 250GB SSD.
Take out existing ODD, Add HDD by using caddy.
Buy ODD caddy to make it to portable ODD

I agree but only if low performance is not an issue.
I have done this on my lenovo (they call it ultrabay) to store some virtual machines. Pity that the data flow (from the HDD will be SATAI or SATAII I suppose) will go through the (ODD) IDE channel slowing things even further.

This is because even though the caddy is "SATA" the connection between the CD-ROM drive (ODD) and the motherboard is still "IDE" on modern laptops so the data coming from/going to the caddy HDD won't benefit from SATA speed the HDD can deliver.

  • Installing is really easy. DVD drive replacement caddy is very simple. Replacing existing hard drive just as simple.

videos aplenty on youtube to do this but should be easy as removing a few screws, hard drives are plug n play on the whole.

if going for the caddy, probably better to replace the internal hard drive with the ssd and put the old mechanical drive in the DVD caddy. Or as an external HDD if that's preferable.
    Friendly greeting!
  • Just bought a 2nd had laptop for my daughter's Christmas.
Approx 3 year old IBM Lenovo Thinkpad T510 laptop Intel I5 M540

Opted to buy a Crucial 240 SSD separately from Amazon lightning deal, especially as the laptop only had a 1 month warranty from where I bought it.

Cloned the drive with Macrium Reflect (free).
You also still have the original hdd as a backup.

Timings (starts at power button press)...

    320 HDD
    0:45 – Welcome text
    1:48 – Desktop taskbar shows

    2:03 – Windows startup sound

    240 SSD
    0:20 – Welcome text
    0:24 – Desktop taskbar shows

    0:24 – Windows startup sound

In addition, all applications are now starting much faster, ie. 5 fold or so faster.

I stuck one in my old Dell XPS desktop the other day. It's really given it a kick up the bum.
