I'm in my 60s, I can't think of any women I know in their 60s and 70s who can't drive. Actually a few of the men I know in their 70s can no longer drive due to health issues but the women still can. Even women I know in their 80s are drivers, I know a couple of women who learned to drive during the Second World War and are still drivingSell £1500

Attendance Allowance if he has care needs.
If he gets it, then your mother may be able to claim Carer's Allowance.
If the OP's mum receives her state pension and it's more than carers allowance, (which is £61 something per week) she won't qualify. However, if they claim pension credit, the OP's mum would be entitled to a carers premium.Sealed pot challenge #232. Gold stars from Sue-UU - :staradmin :staradmin £75.29 banked

Which she wouldn't get if she didn't claim CA.
People get put off claiming CA because they are told that 'pensioners can't claim it'.0 -
Thanks,
My mum has driven for years... He had his first major heart attack when he was only 37. She had young children, one of whom has a disability, and a husband with a knackered heart.... She has had no choice!!!
Thankyou everyone for all your help. I phoned the attendance allowance help line today and they are sending forms out.
My dad has never applied for this sort of thing before... He is a very proud ... And stubborn... Man!!
I know the feeling. That was very similar to my first husband except that, with a 'knackered heart', he died 20 years after the first heart attack aged 37.
DH's cousin's widow can't drive and it was extremely awkward for her all the time he spent in hospital. I know a lot of other women in their 70s who never learned.Ær ic wisdom funde, ær wearð ic eald.

None of my aunts, on either side of my family, ever learnt to drive. And many of my female neighbours, cousins and friends, who are in their 60s, 70s and 80s, never learnt to drive either.
But they all know how to ask for a lift!

I can't drive but rarely ask for lifts. I have one friend though who has said that I must let her know if I need a lift if my husband is working. Even if I could drive he would have the car for work so would be in the same position.Lost my soulmate so life is empty.

But if he was ill, or was in hospital you would be able to do all the driving. After coming out of hospital, my husband wasn't allowed to drive for 3 months, so I did all the driving i.e. taking him for hospital visits etc.
I think you seriously need to think about learning to drive.
I know lots of people from the 60's who couldn't be bothered to learn to drive as they said 'well my husband always takes me where I want to go':cool:0 -

I won't be taking your 'advice', which I presume is well meant. The very thought terrifies me!!:eek:Lost my soulmate so life is empty.

I wonder if women over 60 driving varies round the country. In my cul de sac I can think of 6 women over 60. Only one can't drive. We are all in our 60s or 70s. My aunts, who are all in their 80s can all drive although my mother couldn't. The generation above me, say late 70s and 80s could/can all drive, my mother would be just turned 90 if she was still alive. There were a couple of women in my mothers generation who could drive but they were particularly self confident women, mind you most of the women in my family were.
Interestingly in my youngest children's circle the girls all learned to drive as soon as they were 17 but the boys seemed to wait till they were in their 20s.
I think driving patterns to include age and sex might make an interesting study.Sell £1500

She maybe won't qualify for any extra payment, because one 'benefit' ie. the pension is higher than the carers allowance, but she will have an underlying care allowance which will help towards her rates and her rent (if they are renting).
Or, we can keep going on about lady drivers.0
