That's just the same as buying something, wearing it for the occasion then returning it to the shop or mail order company, quite common.

My wife stopped ordering stuff through her club for a couple of people because of this and this was 30 odd years ago.

See I always thought the whole 'ebay as a payday loan' thing was a bit far fetched, then I read this thread...

Thought I had seen or heard it all (shopkeeper for 20 years), but have not come across this one before.
It seems inevitable that this particular type of scam is going to end in tears for the seller, if not now then in the not too distant future.
What happens when they just can't raise anymore money to tie them over?
    They must be absolutely desperate.

Although personally I think she's lying, I've had an awful lot of items returned to me this year as "the address doesn't exist". I think royal mail have maybe changed their systems slightly ? Before this year I never had any items returned for the wrong address.

What 'system' do you think existed/changed?

items dont get RTS (return to sender) on route unless there's no way to get an item to its delivery area.
Its for the delivery offices to try and work out where something is.
However staff has less time these days to play guess the recipient.

If the price is approx £12.95

Was it a heavy ish item? If so

This suggests to me it is Parcel Force 48 from PO. - £12.98

When this service is purchased, the postcode has to entered & house No. & the system will find the correct address

She will also have these details printed on her receipt & a tracking No.

If it is this - ask her for tracking No. so you can see for yourself the detailed route of the parcel.
