Sky plus question

I saw an advert today for a special offer Sky Plus box for £99.
We have an old Sky box and only subscribed for one year and since then have had the free channels only, now have the FreeSat card which cost us £20 and are happy with that, don't want any more channels.
Is it possible to have a Sky Plus box and just have a FreeSat card and not subscribe to a package as we're thinking the recording facility will be very useful.

If you can find a way of legally purchasing the box without a subscription it would probably cost a lot more than £99.

Several places sell a Sky+ box, perfectly legal. (It's not like cable boxes where cable boxes are always the cable's property). Sky boxes are your property from day one, and you can buy and sell them as you wish, also satellite retailers (yes, there are still some left, Sky didn't kill them all off when they switched to digital and started supplying themselves). However you must have two feeds coming from the LNB on the dish, this is a case of swapping the single LNB for a Quad LNB and using high-satellite quality co-ax to add the extra feed. The Quad LNB allows for four feeds. If you have FreesatFromSky (BBC own the trademark Freesat, hence FreeSatFromSky). and you want the recording facility you have to pay £10 per month for that, if you subscribe to any Sky package you don't have to pay the £10 per month fee. It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!(OK my English isn't great, the sciences, maths & IT are my strong points!)0

Only if you have some sort of subscription. They still charge if you want the facilities using FreeSat.Dave. :wave:0 -

Not if you don't subscribe to at least their basic package.0 -

Yes, that they did, but you have to subscribe to a minimum package, which is 2 mixes or more. For those who don't subscribe to a package, ie on FreesatFromSky, you have to pay the £10/month fee. It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... Thank you BexTech for explaining so thoroughly.
As we don't subscribe to a package and haven't done so for years, I was unaware of how Sky+ worked. We're obviously not willing to pay £10 per month just for the recording facility, so will look at PVRs or DVD recorders instead.0
