I agree you can get old luxbarges cheap, but you're talking about £4k for a 12 year old estate that's either going to be tatty or have been to the moon and back, where you can get a mondeo estate of the same age for a quarter of the price.
But we're talking about a new driver, in London. Insurance is going to be painful enough without getting a group 35 car. That's before you even factor in maintenance costs.
I doubt the OP cares enough about cars of prestige to pay so much for a car that is beyond their requirements in completely unnecessary ways. Within London you're really going to be stretching that inline 6 cylinder engine crawling up to 20mph every hundred feet.
Sure, it'd be nice if you like that sort of thing, but the only criteria this meets is "estate" and "£3-4k". If you move away from BMW (I don't get your obsession) you'll find literally dozens of better options (for the OP).0
