A fair price?

I have had a quote of £250 to paint a hall. just a medium hall, straightforward painting. no windows no wood-work.(doors etc ) I will supply the paint and it will need 2 coats over a day and a half.
I think it sounds ok bit i can't seem to get any other estimates so have no way of knowing.

It seems a bit steep - especially if you are providing the materials. Is there no way you could manage to do it yourself.

I don't know if you have something similar, but my local Freecycle has what is called a 'cafe' group online, and people ask for recommendations etc. for just this sort of thing, help with anything really. Is there perhaps something similar.

You could also perhaps try local newspaper shops for window ads - the newsagent might even know the person and be happy to recommend them.

Or ask neighbours if they could recommend someone that might have done some work for them?

I thought the same as LadyDee 'cos it's not a big job, but i suppose it must be harder for you now. Maybe for 2 days work that;s the going rate. I've read about groups on the Internet where people get together and swop their skills, one person may offer to do some painting if another person offers to do some knitting or sewing, things like that.
Can't remember the name now but i'll go and look.
    UPDATE:
The name i was trying to think of was LETS, see about it here or google it.http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/10578604

Hi, we move threads if we think they’ll get more help elsewhere (please read the forum rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board. If you have any questions about this policy please email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com.

I’ve moved your thread from the ‘I wanna’ board to the ‘Is This Quote Fair?’ board, where it is better suited.

£125 a day is about the going rate for a good jobbing decorator.

Are you anywhere near a college ('near' could be 25 miles or so!) which offers courses in building or decorating? If so, ask them if they've got any students who would like the work experience in exchange for a more modest payment. Just check what supervision the college would give (normally they are excellent at this sort of thing and delighted to have 'real' jobs for their students).

I just paid £300 for a double bedroom including wood work plus paint was included etc. Nothing supplied by me. I think £250 is a bit pricey but if I liked the tradesperson etc I would probably go with it depending on other options.
