  • White stuff out of the sky, Dafty? What a horrid thought. We've got very cold and wet stuff falling out of ours and that's bad enough with the fallen leaves and the annual attempts of the bourne that runs under the house and next road to pop its head up and say hello - not looking forward to mornings walking up the hill when it's like a skating rink. It looks pretty, mind, but it's best viewed from the perspective of not having to negotiate it falling, freezing, melting and refreezing over concrete and hundreds of cars each day, most incapable of driving safely at the best of times. Unless, of course, it's a snow day. I'll take one of those anytime without hesitation.

I think I'd have a regular antihistamine habit with those allergies - I'm allergic to cats, but you'll never find me without at least one; as long as the place is well vacuumed, I don't get too bad all the time I'm in constant contact with the beggars. Take my idiot animals away and I'd be itching and sneezing at the first sniff (sorry) of one.

Idiot Cat is being surpassed by Idiot FIL, who has decided he doesn't need anybody's help and is now, having lied, manipulated and generally treated all family around him like dirt, refusing contact with doctors, physios, social services, home helps, everybody. Told Himself he's got to let him go hungry, get cold, not sleep properly due to his 'bed' being a knackered sofa bed he can't even pull out and use and then fall over the clutter - because he's only going to carry on the lies and rudeness for longer if everybody ignores it and keeps trying to indulge/care for him (and will then blame them when he inevitably ends up back in hospital again). I also expressly forbade him from going down there to tidy up under FIL's supervision. No. Freaking. Way. Been there, got the black eye to show for it. Hoarders, liars and manipulators do not get to 'supervise' anything, especially docile, kind natured people who are trying to help and think a racing bike that can't be ridden is an unnecessary item to keep in a bedsit when the owner can't even get in and out of a shower, never mind on and off a bicycle.

Anyhow, moving has effectively been kicked into the long grass, as I'm not hightailing down, spending loads of money, giving up my house & job (whilst I've still got one, that is) and accepting moving into something I don't like/isn't anywhere near as good/accessible, just to have to deal with that level of nonsense from a 65 year old behaving like a spoiled toddler. And yes, he still has full mental capacity other than losing a few words and planning/execution of steps in planning, shopping and cooking food - he is simply an Idiot. Well, a Controlling Idiot who won't give up being able to control people even to the detriment of his own health.

  • Wow, all of that in just three years! I do hope you recover soon. And Fay, I hope your move goes well and you and your plants settle in happily.
Garden clearing is about to start here, (although on a much smaller scale than most of you are working with). And in preparation I'm ordering soft fruit bushes and planting garlic, (as advised on another thread.)
Choille, I visited friends in the Hebrides for the first time this year and was very, very taken with the place, I guess the islands are all different but that's the setting in which I picture you, and your dog.

Dafty you've achieved loads - it's easy to reckon up what we don't know. The more you learn the less you feel you know sometimes. It's all a learning curve. Hope the man flu eases and the ribs. Look after yourself.

It's much colder here today - the wind would cut the face off you.
I'm off over East tomorrow & will stay over for hospital stuff. Everything is so far away.

Potplant I'm on the north West Coast & I do love the islands but here is remote enough. I did used to life somewhere that was boat access only or a 5 mile cliff walk onto a peninsular. No mains power. The price of electrickery makes me ache for something alternative again but it's expensive setting it up & all cash is on the build at the mo.

Collie Wobble was barking at deer tonight that were up on the road - they are everywhere just now and the goats are down so it is Winter coming time.

drove up to surrey yesterday to pick up friend and enroute came across army chaps halting traffic on the UP part of "the downs" on a windey road... I waited then went when signalled to ....and saw what the hold up was ... some chap had obviously booted it round the bends and took out the side of his car [literally like a tin of sardines ]on an army vehicle transporting a TANK !! how he got away with it I really don't know ... needless to say tank 1 car 0 ....

I got home to find a "missed delivery" card on the doorstep ... need a degree in psycology to figure out how / where / when to collect it !! all I get is answer machines !!

Alfie - think you must have driven past the end of my road yesterday! Thankfully I didn't need to go out that way, but I heard there were a couple of accidents.

I've had one productive day in the garden this week, and since then it's been cold and rainy. Thankfully water levels aren't high enough to mean I need to clear the stream yet, but I'll need to get some of the vegetation out before long.

Haven't done anything about getting the mower checked out yet, it's still on the list. I'm half tempted to just buy a replacement anyway...

My new chain saw arrives tomorrow....:j When I suddenly remembered Mrs Government was about to send me my winter fuel allowance, I threw caution to the winds and bought a Makita, which has a 3 year guarantee. :D

Mentioning the white stuff, it looked really grim up towards Exmoor the other day, but nothing happened and we're pretty dry again now. Yes, it's been cold, but I've had 'warming' activities to do and every day without a deluge is a bonus.:)

Nothing major to report. DD2+ partner dropped in at the weekend and announced the date of their civil wedding, which will be a fairly low-key affair next spring. The big Indian one is more or less on the same date the following year ...Talk about dragging it out! :rotfl:

Nil carborundum Jojo; you will get down here..... eventually!

  • Slightly different interlude at work today. (Background: I was pressganged into working late last night, everything went brilliantly, but I was massively stressed and it's physically demanding. So today, I was sore, tired and faced with the inevitable clear up AND lots of other lifting and shifting for the day - but I'm popular with On High, so I've been left alone to get on with it, other than a cheery 'Good Morning!'.

Call came through just as the Site Manager sat down with his soup. He's been up on the roof today in the cold, so he'd earned it. Injured pigeon trapped inside.

Because I'm not a monster and most people here seem to spontaneously combust at the thought of a animal anywhere near them that isn't served in a bucket, I breezily declared this to be within my area of expertise and dashed off with a large plastic container.

Get up the stairs to find vaguely ineffectual staff talking about getting sticks to perch upon, gasps about pigeon poo on the floor, etc. So I sat down on the stairs, thinking perhaps my silence would be a clue. Nope. Lots of 'won't it fly out if you put it in there?' and a loud dash for a phone to film it. Obviously, poor flying rat is terrified and tries to bash its brains out on the window. They continue to approach.

My internal 'SHUT UP, BACK OFF AND LET ME HANDLE THIS' was obviously transmitted by telepathy, as at that point, the poor thing decides that flying down beside the dumpy one in a green fleece is the safest bet, I treat it like a supersized spider and it's safely in the tub in one swift move.

Stampede of staff nearly causes me to go ballistic, but I extracted it to the sounds of 'but IT'LL FLY AWAY, WHAT ARE YOU DOING?'. You said 'injured', so I'm checking her wings. Phone gets shoved almost in my and the bird's face as I explain that plastic waste has meant she's missing a foot, but her wings are fine and I'm taking her downstairs to release her. Stampede follows me down the stairs as I pick a nice, clear spot for launch as quickly as possible.

She gets the hell away from the humans like a missile, staff member with the phone gets a great shot of that - and one of me grinning like a loon.

I have a suspicion that I have now been placed upon A List for attending to sick, injured and intruding animals.

Nice day today but cold although dry. Beach walk with collie wobble who legged it across to a dog who wanted to attack him & then veered off to another & wouldn't come so I had to leg it after him. I do wish he would come when I call but he doesn't.

Hop ethat dolly recovers well Alfie - what a trooper & what a lovely feral cat. He/she looks fat & healthy.

Dave good use of the fuel allowance.

JoJo - yes, good for you getting on with the rescue.

Hopefully it will be nice again tomorrow & we can get more wood sawn up =- we are doing stuff slowly but getting there in a sort of hazy/dazy fashion.
