The perfect patio roof? Is it possible?

We have a south facing living room with large bifold doors opening onto a patio. We would like to build a roof over the patio but want the best of both worlds - a roof to stop the living room getting like an oven in summer but doesn't stop the light getting in in the winter. Any ideas please?

Large horizontal blind. Not sure what they are actually called.. Try googling retractable awning. Is that what you want?

Thanks, but I was thinking of a permanent structure, like a room but without walls, just a roof supported by pillars of some sort.

If it's going to stop the sun in summer, it's going to stop it in winter too, no way around that unless you have a retractable awning.

A modern verandah, with grape vines trained beneath it on wires, would cast little shade in winter, yet provide this in summer. Bonus of fruit too. :)

A patio is just that, by definition:

    pat·i·o (pt-, pät-)
    n. pl. pat·i·os
    1. An outdoor space for dining or recreation that adjoins a residence and is often paved.
    2. A roofless inner courtyard, typically found in Spanish and Spanish-style dwellings.

That's the pedantic bit over with.

I too would go with the high street type roller blind, only of any use in calm but cool or damp summer conditions.

Me personally, trellis over a pagola, Jap style may be, evergreen clematis and as DS says the mood creating vines.
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed

My granddaughters school has a canvas sail type thing they put up in the playground in the Summer the children sit under it and in the Winter it comes down and is stored away..

She wants a roof to keep the sun out of her sitting room, it'll go straight through that and make it even hotter.
