Hiya,
Was on a walk the other day and noticed the hazelnuts on the trees near me. I know they're meant to be harvested green so how do you know when they're ripe? I don't think it's for another month or so but would like to try one before the squirrels get to them!

According to Richard Mabey's Food for Free, he states, 'They ripen in mid September, at about the same time as the leaves begin to yellow'....... 'Use a walking stick to bend down the branches.'
'Once you have gathered your nuts, keep them in a dry warm place, but in their shells.'0 -
The Guardian has a pull out section on Pick your own farms today and it includes a calendar of when things ripen. September is the first month that cobnuts appear in the list. They are very green at the moment, but plentiful. I would wait another month if you can.0

We have a hazelnut tree in our garden which produces loads. We never know what to do with them. Our daughter tends to pile them up and waits for the squirrels!!
Any ideas would be great.0 -
