Disability Discrimination for Jobs?

In this day and age where jobs are harder and harder to come by (2 million unemployed for 500K jobs), does it mean people with disabilities and perceived flaws won't get an opportunity?
They will obviously have some flaw to their disability, so even though they might want to work, they can't because they are not given a chance because why would a company employ someone like that when they can employ someone without it?
I think the government need to sort it out, such as subsidizing (atleast part of their) wages to help disabled people get considered and a fair chance (they would save money in the long run)
What is the answer?

The problem is, you can't prove the discrimination. The company will simply say they've found a candidate with more experience, relevant qualifcations, etc.Sealed pot challenge #232. Gold stars from Sue-UU - :staradmin :staradmin £75.29 banked

There is no simple answer. Subsidies don't work for many reasons - most importantly they reinforce the stereotype that disabled people are inefficient. We used to have a quota system but that didn't work either. The only real solution is to change the negative assumptions about disability, sadly the current govt has only reinforced them

When I left school 30+ years ago the job centre told me to register as disabled (deafness in one ear) and I would get a job in Vauxhalls straight away as they had to take on so many disabled workers.0

I know when my Dad was unemployed in early 70's he was given a green card status & got a job in the local box factory. His employer loved him as he helped fill the quota & he did shift work 5 days a week. He was diabetic & had to carry sugar in case of a problem, but he worked as hard as the others, you had to back then. He had been wounded in the war which was where the disability came in, but he was able bodied even so. He & my mum set a strong work ethic in both me & my elder brother & were it not for getting an auto immune illness I would still be working at 50 years old. Now I can maybe walk 6 meters to the loo, before collapse. But daily mail readers & this gov't have put it about that the sick/ill are worthless scroungers - none of the treatments have worked to date & there is no cure & it can be fatal.0

Well I feel I was discriminated against at uni for my practice placements. I had a work place assesment but wasmt really interacting with patients. They did little tests such as hearing calls for help or buzzer behind a thick door. I was talking to my friends about it and they are hearing and they said they can't even hear buzzers and shouts for help behind the doors. They also had only one adjustment which was telephone amplifier but didn't work.
In a meeting afterwards my mam did the talking for me as I was upset I had been removed from course. She asked why was a deaf nurse not brought in to advise what could help me ( they said they had experience of deaf nurses) they said to us that they felt it wasn't appropriate to bring someone else into the situation. Also we mentioned there is a lot of deaf nurses out there as I had been communicating with them for advice. They then said well we have to get me qualified first before thinking of being a deaf nurse. I, thinking well how have they qualified then surely not all lost their hearing after qualification.
We appealed the discion but the top guy said he reviewed my case and can't see any reason for overturning it. We were going to take legal action but we couldn't find a lawyer specialising in disability discrim in work place or anything as my situation is strange it's not work but it's education but I'm still working.Mortgage free wannabe

Not being funny but I'd be alarmed if I found myself on a ward where the nurse couldn't hear me if I cried out for help.0
