Tax Rebate help

Sorry if this has been submitted to the wrong section. I wasn't sure what it would fall under.

Basically, I applied for a tax rebate back in May - HMRC had sent it to the wrong address - although, I checked said address and the occupant had not received it.

HMRC then cancelled the cheque and said they were issuing me a new one. Eight weeks later and cheque had not turned up. I phone again and the same routine happens. It's been a further 9 weeks and my THIRD cheque has still not turned up.

I've raised the complaints with HMRC, but I feel this is pointless as all they say they can do is, "wait to cancel it and then send it out again" Despite my cheque failing to turn up three times.

I've sent a letter to them and have had no response and i'm getting really angry now. I've wasted time after time ringing up, spending ages on hold and then having no luck with any of the agents that I speak to on the phone.

Has anyone else had issues like this? Surely three tax rebates failing to turn up is a bit strange, though not to HMRC. More so, what else can I do? rather than play an endless game of waiting eight weeks for cheques than continuously fail to turn up.

Thanks in advance!

  • You could ask if they'd do a direct payment into your bank account as 3 cheques have not arrived. If they agree they will need sort code & account number & bank + your name as per how it is on the account.

Unfortunately if it's a PAYE refund HMRC do not do direct payments into bank accounts. If you ask for it to be credited to your bank account they will send a cheque directly to your bank with instructions to pay it into your account.

Had a similar issue with my daughter-in-law which was only resolved with a direct letter of complaint. I would suggest you now go down this line.
