PAYG 3G stick with wifi

We are going on a family trip to south wales in a few weeks for 7 days and we are renting a place with no broadband/wifi.

DAK what would be a good option for a 3G dongle with wifi to connect the ipads/tablets/phones/laptops/zx81's that we will invariably take along?

Looking at the coverage we will be restricted to EE/T-Mobile or Vodafone.

If anyone has done anything like this recently then I would be grateful for any nuggets of advice such as if you purchased a 2nd hand bit of hardware off ebay and got a payg data sim from someone etc.

PS - I know I can just look up a payg tarrif for mobile broadband on their web sites and get a price but just checking if there are any alternatives for a short trip.

Do any of you going on the trip have a mobile contract with unlimited data ?

If so, you could (subject to your contract) tether that mobile and make it a "wi-fi" hot spot for everyone to use.

If you have EE/T-Mobile coverage, have you also checked Three's coverage? If you don't have a phone you can use as a hotspot, I've found Three generally offer cheaper data than the others.

If you do have a phone which can provide a wireless hotspot, even if you don't have tethering you may find you can still run tablets through it but not laptops. Often you can add tethering on for a fiver a month or so.

I use my phone as a hotspot on Three all the time when travelling despite not having tethering on my contract. I have with no problems using it for my tablet (and indeed use if for my laptop, but that requires a bit of effort to work around the block).

Are you sure that Vodafone has 3G coverage in that location?

I would also unlock the MiFi for 99p.
and enter the EE APN manually.

Name - EE Internet

Then to have an EE mobile broadband SIM on standby.

Perhaps you can use the MiFi for other trips and worldwide. You can connect up to five items wirelessly to it at a time.

The Vodafone coverage checker suggests there is 3G coverage indoors and outdoors (as does the EE checker) however I won't be making the 5 hour trip down there beforehand so it will be a bit of a leap of faith.

Whats the worst that can happen - no wifi we all have to talk to each other!
Seriously though, there is a bit of college work and homework that we already know will require internet access - it might mean a trip to somewhere with wifi but as I am considered the technical person, I thought i'd explore all the options.
