Hey guys, My mums been a fan of this website for as long as i can remember :P She said i should come on here if i ever need advice with money and stuff

We basically need you guys advice on which cheap but healthy dog food for our puppy, He was on James Wellbeloved from 15 weeks old to about 20 weeks old, The smell of his gas and the mess in the back garden clearly showed he didnt work quite well with that! He then went onto Wainrights, which he did great on up until he was 8 months old - This was when we moved house and had to cut out budget slightly - We found a local pets at home and found their home brand, He did well on it for a few months and now ive noticed he doesnt want to eat it as much, he picks at it during the day and we've noticed that he will pick up a small mouthful then take it to his bed and really crunch it up, we thought this might have meant he just thought it was too big so we tried different ways to make them smaller but Nothing

The 14kg bag costs £10 and lasts a few months, We've gone through 1 1/2 bag since April, We are happy to spend up to about £20

Sorry for all the writing ive never been good at telling a story! So to simplify this all

I own a 1 year 4 months old Male (Still with his junk) Border collie
The vet has given him the all clear.
Cut budget so we need to find a food that will help his poops and farts not smell so rancid and be healthy too

Any help would be great! hes my first dog that i've owned myself and that im 100% responsible for, ive owned 3 other family dogs, but when it comes to my puppy i have to make double sure im doing whats right for him and giving him the best i can afford :)

thanks guys!

[Edited cause i realised how i rambled for ages :P]

My border collies do really well on Skinners Field and Trial. I alternate between Duck and Rice, Salmon and Rice and Turkey and Rice. It's a working dog food, so I give them a little less than the packet suggests as they don't get as much exercise as a working collie does. It seems expensive but they just get two small teacupfuls a day so it lasts for ages! They don't have gas and poo's are firm and not stinky so easy to pick up!

I buy it from GJW Titmuss as they offer free delivery if you buy two sacks at a time, so it saves me carrying sacks home from a pet shop.

Two 15kg sacks last about 10 weeks for two adult collies, so it works out about £5-6 a week depending on what flavours I buy.

There are cheaper Skinners like the Rough and Ready but they didn't do as well on those. They've been best on the ones with named meats as listed above.
Here I go again on my own....

Check out https://www.allaboutdogfood.co.uk - you'll find plenty of foods around the 3 star range that are decent enough quality, and many of a reasonable price.

The website also gives a 'per day' cost, which is more accurate than the cost of a bag - not only do bag sizes vary (e.g 12kg, 15kg, etc.) but the volume of food you feed does too. 100g a day of a £40 bag of food is going to cost you the same as 200g of a £20 bag of food. 'Cheap' food can often be false economy for this reason.

Harringtons is a fair food that won't break the bank. Has maize in it but that's the only bad thing.

Also wet food generally is better for dogs. If you can get Naturediet or Nature's Harvest or Simpsons then that would be better.

If you get a really cheap food, you will just be picking up the poo at the other end. The dog won't get anything from it :/
  • Second Skinners Field and trial maintenance. I fed my BC on it for years before he needed a food for senior dogs.

I used to feed Pets at Home before the skinners and when I made the change his condition improved no end. I think the maintenance skinners is vat free. You will have to find a local stockist as pets at home I doubt will sell it. (It's in an orange bag and about £18 for 15kg)

My BC is now 8 and is fed Lovejoys senior food, but he looks and acts like a much younger dog. Lovejoys is fab food too but more expensive than skinners as there's the dreaded vat to pay.
