I am looking in to giving up work to become my daughter fulltime carer she has recently been registered disabled in January I have tried to push on workingas I like my job but finding it difficult as she has a lot of appointments during my working day I'm a single parent so just want to know what I would be able to claim if I did give up work as I know some benefits have restricted times if u give up work but not sure if they apply if I'm becoming a carer or what I would be able to claim if they do thanks in advance for your help

Hi, I'm a former carer and I received Carer's allowance (approx £61 per week) plus income support - which included a carer's premium. In addition, if you rent, you should be able to claim housing benefit and council tax help.
Good luck.0 -
I thought if u leave a job u can't claim housing benifit or ct for so many weeks or am I wrong with that0

Housing Benefit and Council Tax Support claims are not interested (unlike the DWP) for the reasons someone ceases work. The claim is based on your household and financial details. You can claim the day after you stop work and unlike the DWP there are no sanctions. These are my own views and you should seek advice from your local Benefits Department or CAB.0 -

I'm not 100% sure but I think in this case it's different. You're not giving up work and trying to claim JSA you're giving up because you pretty much have to - I'm sure that's taken into account. Why don't you try and ring your local council's benefit department and ask them? If not, hopefully housing benefit officer (a regular poster on the forums) will see your thread and tell you the correct info.

Sorry didn't see HBO's post until after I wrote this.0 -
If you claim Carers Allowance - I assume DD gets mid rate care DLA - then you claim an income Support top up. This is not sanctionable like JSA is.
If you rent then you can claim both housing benefit & council tax reduction straight away. You would also get extra allowances because she gets DLA as well, so you need to tell them that. There is also a disability element for child tax credit that is worth £3100/year on top of the full ctc that you'd also get as you are on income support + being on IS & lots of hospital visits means you can claim back travel costs for car/bus/train using form HC5(T). Free meds/dental care & if U wear specs help towards costs. It just takes a while to get it sorted, so try to have a little money put by to pay essential bills in meantime. Hope that helps a bit.0 -
You say she has been registered disabled. Do you mean she is receiving DLA? At what rates? These will depend on whether you can claim Income support and Carers allowance.
You are not planning to claim JSA so leaving your job for whatever reason will not be questioned or sanctioned."You've been reading SOS when it's just your clock reading 5:05 "0 -
A claim of income support would entitle you to full housing benefit for your situation, full child tax credits and council tax support.Sealed pot challenge #232. Gold stars from Sue-UU - :staradmin :staradmin £75.29 banked

Thanks everyone for all your advise and when I say registered yes I do mean DLA and mobility allowance DLA is at the higher rate if this makes a difference0

To get carers your DD has to get mid or high rate care not just the mobility bit.0
