He's probably given your email address when signing up. Has happened to me when someone else with my name kept giving out my email address as his own. His actual addresses were only different from mine by a single hyphen. You can try contacting him if you want or just delete them or make sure you close any accounts or unsubscribe, just do the email equivalent of return to sender emailing the senders back saying you have not subscribed to these services.

  • Thanks superscraper. I've closed down his poker account by returning their emails but the others I've received are no reply emails.

I can't see how this can be an error as my email address is my name@sky.com. Nothing like Lee Leighton or his online moniker lldl23. Why would he do this if not in error.

No reason, if your name is nothing like his then I don't know how he'd make that mistake but because these things are all automated I think it would be almost impossible for it to be an error on the part of all these different companies. So it comes down as usual to the human element whether it's a legitimate mistake or he's deliberately entering a "fake" address maybe just to gain access to these sites which require an email address and it's unfortunate that the "fake" address is in reality a real one that's yours.

I never said anything about more work. You said you didn't do spam filters, You do, maybe with less work, but you do.

There's nothing to filter, filtering involves sorting in some way. I'm not sure what you mean by filtering if I don't even get sent the spam in the first place. Could you elaborate exactly what I'm filtering? I give an email address, that address does not have spam sent to it, I'm not sure at what stage I've accomplished spam filtering.

You did say you'd had phishing emails, same as spam in my book.

Your strategy is just a spam filter of sorts, in my opinion.

We aren't going to agree. But at least you know where they probably got the address from. Which is a lot more than I would ;)

I guess it could be argued I'm doing a filtering of sorts. And I might concede dealing four phishing emails in four years could possibly be strictly defined as spam filtering but I'd say that's pretty negligible, I've gotten more emails than that for mistaken identity.
