Hertz car rental rip off - request a receipt with the return time!
I rented a car from hertz, and returned it and handed over the keys by 10:00 (it was due back at 10:30). I checked there was nothing to sign, and the guy behind the desk was happy.
However, I discovered they are now claiming I returned at 11:15, and thus charging me an extra days rental!
On contacting Hertz, I need to prove I handed it back at 10:00, although as they did not give me a receipt, I can't!
Has anyone else had this problem?
I rented the car from London City Airport.

Thanks for the reply, but I wasn't flying, the airport was the closest place to pick the car up from.
I got the bus from the airport, but had already thrown the bus ticket away!
After writing them a letter, phoning the Hertz desk at the Airport, the main customer support line several times, and various e-mails, they are going to refund the additional day.
When I first asked why I had been overcharged, I was advised 'it was the insurance options I had taken out', I just wonder whether they try it on with everyone?
Another point I discovered is that Car rental is not covered by any credit card protection, you can not dispute it - as you have signed the car rental agreement.
I think I'll be sticking with Avis in the future. Hertz may have better cars, better insurance options, and a bit cheaper, but Avis charge what they say without all the hassle.
Has anyone else had any experiences of Hertz?
Was I merely unlucky or did they assume I wouldn't notice?
I rented from the LCY branch.0 -
What happened to me in Jersey which annoyed me somewhat was I given the KA with 1/2 a tank of fuel and charged £17 for it, and could return it empty. No matter how hard I tried (150+ miles) I still ended up returning the car with around an 1/8 of a tank! I'm sure I didn't get my £17 and would much rather have received the car fully tanked up and given it back in a similar fashion, or suffered a penalty....
But there you go, was still nice to have a car. oh, and as for returning, I was just given an envelope and all I did was put the ignition key and the airport parking ticket in it and stick in an "AVIS" leterbox in the airport departures area - very easy indeed.Money saving:

Its a diesel. 50mpg - laugh at all the petrols
Its a tuned 260bhp diesel - laugh at them in the rearview mirror as they vanish

Most car hire depots have CCTV at entrance and exit, so if happens again at any car hire company ask them to review the CCTV to confirm what happened and provide you with an explanation.
Also say you will take them to the Small Claims Court to recover the money and they will have to produce evidence then or probably lose.0 -
I think with all national car rental companies, it depends on the attitude of the local manager. I got stuck in traffic and was 45 mins late returnining a vehicle to Hertz in Peterborough, only to be told '' that's not a problem Sir, we allow 60 mins leeway''. Have to admit though that the attitude at some of the London branches leaves a lot to be desired.0
