Disclosing card details for refunds

Hope this is the appropriate forum.

I've just requested a refunded from an online trader who failed to deliver the item within the agreed timescale. I have the trader's number and have spoken with him directly. He was understanding and agreed to issue a refund. To do this, he has requested my debit card number and expiry date.

I am unsure if this is wise. I have very little trust left in the company, although like I mentioned, I have been in contact with the owner and he agreed too issue a refund. What precautions would you advise me to take before simply handing over my card details (just the 16-digit number and expiry date. He explicitly said that he does not want the 3-digit security code)

Thanks!

Assuming it's the card that you paid with in the first place then I don't think it's unreasonable for the supplier to require the refund to be made to that card. We see lots of posts where people are complaining that the third party has retained card details after payment has been taken, at least in this case they haven't done that.

Usually, payment would be refunded to where it came from. Did you pay with the card?

But increasingly, your data isn't retained any longer than necessary and depending on how the transaction was handled, so the merchant may not have the details still.
  • If you paid by card they usually ask for the card that you paid with as proof that YOU are the person who originally bought the item.

I wouldn't buy anything online with my Debit card (except Gov't sites) - use a Credit Card.
