Taming a Windows-8 desk-top PC

-
Just to recap, I am the proud owner of a Dell PC running Windows XP; which supposedly fell foul of a virus called IDPTROJAN.CB452937 lurking in C:\Windows\system32\MRT.exe
Its description sounded nasty and AVG claimed to be unable to quarantine it.
That old XP PC is getting on for 10 years old.
So when I was offered a "modern" PC running Windows 8, I thought the logical thing to do was get that up and running, then worry about the old one.
So my internet connection is through a Talk Talk router [Which also does "catch-up telly], and I am reluctant to log into that with the XP machine and risk information being passed back to the Trojan's mothership.
The new Windows8 PC appears to have survived the virus attack according to AVG. However the "new" PC thinks it wants to attach to an AOL router wirelessly. Could it be persuaded to link wirelessly to my Talk Talk.
Other developments:
The widow has received her late husband’s personal files on the memory stick and inserted that into her laptop. The stick must have survived its postal journey as she can access the text type files such as “Word” (.doc)
BUT she seems to be having problems with the photos/video clips (.jpg & .mov) – she too is very busy with things in her personal life and so might not have given the situation her full attention.
Any thoughts ?
There could be some good news in that a parcel has arrived from my son:

The Service Tag of the DELL?
We don't need to know any more details at the mo. Just follow the instructions in post number #2 and then hopefully, you can post from the new PC.0 -
Unfortunately I am rapidly running out of time to devote to this task.
I need to get on with other commitments and will be away from base until next Monday, at which time I will try to pick up the thread again.
Any thoughts on this plug in disc drive?

It obviously predates Windows 8 and contains sume suggestions about visiting support.wdc.com to sort out the formatting between FAT32 & NTFS.
though it is not clear if the utility is already on the disk0 -

MRT.exe which AVG warned you about is part of Microsoft's Malicious Software Removal. Could well have been a false positive.0
