Massive Parking fine of £400

We have been charged a whopping £400 fine for a parking ticket. We received a ticket from the council for parking on a single yellow line for, i think, £35. We annoyingly forgot about this ticket, and unknowingly to us, it has been building up. We had not received any letters - we think they may have gone to the company the car is being leased from. Bailiffs turned up at my boyfriends work threatening to take what they could to cover the fine. But they settled for us paying the fine in full by 9am the next day. Apparently the £400 has amounted to this much due to court cost. Is this allowed? It seems so wrong that they can demand this kind of money of us. I would be interested to know if we can go any further with a complaint / getting any money back.

Have a read through some of the other threads there before you post your own to get the hang of what information they need from you in your opening post - but as a minimum you will need photos/scans of all correspondence you've received from the council (both sides, if appropriate).
PePiPoo has an excellent success record in dealing with council tickets.
