big crack in new double glazing, the frame, and ceiling underneath

i had new double glazing installed 5 months ago. almost straight away something showed up in the bottom left, it looked like a piece of tape but it was actually a crack. 5 months later and a huge crack has formed from the bottom left to the middle right. there is also a crack in the frame in the middle at the top. also, my bed is right next to the window, the room under the bed is the living room and a logn crack has appeared in the ceiling just in the right place where the middle contact points of the legs are.

first of all what could be going on with the double glazing, and how is the crack in the ceiling related? im at a loss as i cant get in touch with the guy who installed it, last time i try and support my local tradesman.

no cracks around the window upstairs or downstairs but upstairs (the room with the window in question) is covered in wallpaper.

bad light but i dont think youd get to see more info than that
  • the wallpaper could be covering other little cracks. If you can't get hold of the glazier that did the work for you I'd be tempted to call other glaziers to have a look and suggest what may be the problem. They'll know what the causes of these things are (if related to the window/installation) and you'll be able to take a next step. Was the work covered by Fensa? If so it's guaranteed...even if the person who installed the window has gone out of business I believe.

Is that the actual glass that is cracked?!

To me, I'd be thinking that the correct lintel support is not in place and the weight of the wall is being supported by the actual window. The pictures are really bad, but the frame looks to be bowing.

i have a certass certificate, but it mentions i should have got a written guarantee from the installer, and the option to have it insured should they cease trading, but i didnt get either...dont even remember an invoice.

yeh its just the internal glass thats cracked. if the lintel isn't in place, could that be affecting the ceiling in the room below?

Have you replaced the windows in the room downstairs as well?

The stress has to impact somewhere. That needs serious remedial work, IMO. That sort of thing just doesn't happen. I mean, we've had to replace windows that have been messed with, no lintels and the bricks have slipped All over the place and even rebuilt brickwork above windows but I've not seen the actual window do that.

Where did you find this company for them to now be uncontactable.

  • firstly is this a flat window or a bow/bay window .can you see any cracking to joints in outside brickwork ie as doozergirl suggests no lintel or if bow/bay brickwork may not be supported by the correct poles/posts to corners .The glass cracking could be not packed properly and the glass has hit a screw .Even if there is no outside lintel there is usually one inside and without seeing the window in relation to the crack i cannot say what has caused that from those pictures which apart from the ceiling crack dont mean very much
