Sometimes the mouse jumps about of its own accord, or doesn't make anything happen when I click, or begins to scroll, and generally behaves without regard to its instructions.
Its a Logitech mediaplay cordless mouse and I have just updated the driver and installed a new battery.
With the old corded mouse, I could clean the mouseball. What part of this one can one maintain to produce less erratic behaviour?

Optical mice don't like shiny or white surfaces, try putting it on something dark.
Although, if it's not clicking or scrolling properly it sounds fairly b*ggered to me. Might be time to look for a refund.0 -
You say it's a cordless mouse? Have you tried moving the receiver around, closer or further from mouse and away from speakers, monitor etc where it could get interference... Sometimes just finding a good spot for the receiver to pick up the signal from the mouse works a treat - trial and error though...0

no advice - good use of the word skittish though!

If its optical, it could be the surface its on.
We had fun and games at the last place I worked with optical mice on just the desktops, which turned out to be ever so slightly rough and, thanks to our diligent cleaners, very well polished! Therefore, the light was reflecting back ever so slightly "off", which the mouse was interpreting as movement.
If you really want to give an optical mouse a nervous breakdown, stick it on some of that shiny metallic holographic patterned paper! The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life.
