Neighbour has replaced her guttering, but ours is damaged as a result

Hello

Please could you help, we live in a semi detached house and our neighbour has just had their guttering replaced. We were completely unaware that they intended to do this. The guttering on the properties was metal (possibly aluminium) and they have replaced their side with plastic. The problem is that as a result of this work our gutters have been pulled away from the fascia boards. The gutters are now hanging away from the house by around 3 to 4 inches. In addition where they have joined the new plastic ones to our old metal ones, it looks wrong because of the difference in sizes. We spoke to our neighbour who simply told us she had 'sacked' the roofer responsible. She then arranged for another local roofer to give us a quote - she has no intention of contributing to the cost in any way. We had hoped that the gutter could be 'pushed back', but the roofer said the screws had rusted and they would be unable to put new brackets on, because of the size of the gutter. We are now faced with the situation that the work will cost £650 for new gutters or £1400 for new gutters/fascia boards. It seems wrong that we now have to pay for this work, especially as to find this money would be very hard.
Please can I have your advice - thank you

  • Can you post a picture of your guttering please?
  • I would tell your neighbour it is her responsibility to make your gutters "good" again. Her contractor has damaged them so she should be responsible for the repair of them.
  • The person she employed is responsible. Def. not her (although it would be nice if she was a little sympathetic!)
Ask her for their details and contact them direct. Be ready to state your rights. They are insured for this type of thing (a 3rd party's property has been damaged) and that you'll be taking things further if they don't sort it out.
