Iphone4 random key presses when on a Call

My Sister-in-Law has an iPhone4 which has started dialling numbers and muting calls when she is already on another call.

Does anybody have a solution to this problem? Or is it a fault with the handset?

The proximity sensor on the front near the speaker should detect when the phone is close to her face and disable the screen. In the first instance just try cleaning the face of the phone properly and do a reset of the phone (hold power and home button for 10 seconds).

As previously stated, it is because the proximity sensor is not working (or being allowed to work). A common cause of this is a badly fitting case partially covering the sensor or a brightly coloured case causing reflections. For example, I had a bright red Otterbox case which caused problems, but these went away when I swapped to the same model in black.
