electronic items bought on ebay (uk) , listed as seller in Manchester (UK) , note from post office saying they want paying import tax/VAT and there collection fee.

looking at the seller , hidden deep down (after buying) is a hong kong/china address.

as the items were bought on ebay UK and the place of dispatch was UK, am I liable for those costs.

  • If you want the goods, then yes you will have to pay.

Either pay the duty, get the items and then take it up with seller/eBay or don't collect, return to sender and claim INR for a full refund.
  • umm , ok but the item was listed as being sold from Manchester , and as this was a UK to UK sale , you would expect all the relevant taxes to have been paid?
  • That's a given. Its against eBay policy and is unacceptable.

My point is, how desperate are you for the goods? If you need them immediately, you will have to pay the duty to get the goods released. Then complain to the seller and if he is not forthcoming with an explanation and a refund on the duty, take it up with eBay.

If you can live without the goods, don't pay, the goods will be returned and you open a claim for INR.

Yes, but that doesn't alter the fact that if you want to release the item you need to pay the customs charge.
  • ok this makes ebay a joke , an item sold , supposedly from the UK , then a 10-20% "eccess" charge added.

    note to self:

ebay is a joke , buy less from ebay.
  • The mantra of many a buyer/seller

Dont pay any fees just yet.
Contact the seller asap and see what they have to say.

should have done the looking (due diligence on the seller) before buying, not after.
The questions that get the best answers are the questions that give most detail....

Much as I like Ebay bashing these days, it may not be their fault, buyer will probably be lying about where they or the product are.

The only advice would be to not collect the item and claim non receipt. As above, contact the seller first and see what they say but it doesn't look promising.
    .
  • ok , when I am after a product , I filter the settings to be UK only , so as not to get items in the USA / china / hong kong visible.

hopefully then and only then I hope I am dealing with a UK company , and any return problems/warranties can be easily sorted.

however more and more non UK sellers are hiding behind "Manchester / Liverpool etc" as the place that the parts are being sent from.

this is the first time this has happened on a product from china /HK , I wonder if the royal mail/HMC have now cought on?
