I have a Nationwide Flexplus account, which costs £10 a month which includes European breakdown cover, travel insurance and mobile phone insurance.

I use this as well. Broke down in France and waas impressed with the service. It's run by Britannia Resue.

You don't need to switch bank accounts, I use NW alongside my existing account.
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.

if i was going to use a breakdown service year in year out i would maybe think of doing this, but we only need breakdown cover for 8 days this month for definite and maybe a week in March next year

I once looked into doing this with my bank account a few years ago, I had to have a certain amount paid in every month and at least three direct debits a month going out. I am happy with the bank accounts I have so not looking to change things at the moment

quite a few of the european breakdown providers I have read up on also have a clause that says the car has to be serviced and maintained to the manufacturers standards. so i guess that lessens any possible claims

Potentially, but the two wholesalers I spoke to didnt bring this aspect up.

The first gave the two explanations above, the second tried to charge a small extra for European cover which I contested and they backed down quickly on the same reasons.
