Landlord refuses to add my name to the tenancy agreement.

Alright, but if that's the case, then why would he refuse to add me to the tenancy in the first place? If he knew it wouldn't secure/benefit me anyway, and that he could evict me, then why would he say no?
If the status quo is working for the LL and T why go changing things? Besides I'm willing to bet anything that the LA will charge the LL for changing the tenancy agreement.0 -
He doesn't have to and although he could evict you he might have to go through the courts to do so. So he is just trying to keep things simple and avoid any problems that may arise.
If you want to keep the place then when your parents give notice contact him and offer to take the tenancy on. If he's then happy to think about it he'll put you through his normal credit checks and either say yes or no depending on the results.0 -

For the reasons I mentioned above... Surely my thinking is not completely unreasonable.
Also, I'm not sure if it's the landlord that'd have to pay for changing the TA, but if so, then I'd be more than happy to cover them. Maybe I should ask about that, hmm0 -

Do what you feel you must. The LL doesn't have to add you to the TA and even if you do wear him down and he agrees to it, it doesn't give you any more security than you already have.0 -
If u sign up as joint tenants and then your parents leave. If they serve notice, then all joint tenants are required to honour it, at which point you could ask for an individual tenancy agreement.
It's really nothing to do with cost and more to do with ignorance, yours in this case.0 -

In which case by that point I would have hopefully shown myself to be a reliable tenant, which could in turn (hopefully) make my case stronger for renting the place on my own.0 -
Do bear in my mind that if you start creating a fuss about your name not being on the tenancy, the landlord may not wish to entertain such a troublemaker as a sole tenant when your parents eventually move.If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales0

It's true, but so far I haven't made a fuss. I haven't even spoken to the landlord yet. I only had two conversations with the agency so far - one to inquire about the issue, second was just when they called me back to say that they don't think the landlord will be going for it but they'll 'try him again sometime'. I haven't said anything since, I wanted to ask people for advice on here first before making a move0 -
Either getting you on the agreement gives you rights and the landlord responsibilities to you (in which case why would he agree?) or it doesn't (in which case why would you want to?).0
