New Carpet Maintenance

Hello All,

I've had new carpets put down in my house on Monday, a family member advised that they it should not be hoovered for the first six months, is this the case?

Thanks

When we had new carpets installed the fitters advised us to hoover three times a week at least initially. You'll find that they shed quite a lot for the first few weeks.

No hoovering for 6 months? What a load of tosh.

Once a carpet is down, it's down. As above, the hoover will fill up quickly for the first few weeks.

Not hovering for six months!!
I moved in to my current flat one day after new carpet had been laid and one of the first things I did was give it a thorough vacuuming to get rid of all the excess fluff, as others have already said.

LOL no! It's not true!!! Are they getting confused with the fact that you're not supposed to wallpaper a newly built house for a a minimum if six months? (Or maybe it's twelve???) Because the building is still settling.
Proud to have lost over 3 stone (45 pounds,) in the past year! :j Now a size 14!

I had wool carpets laid around Easter time and I'm still filling a bag every two weeks:eek:

If you have a cut loop carpet then use the beater brush on the vacuum , really gets down the pile and stops it flattening

Sure fire way to ruin a new carpet by letting 6 months of filth build up on it!! Hoover as much or as little as you like, it will drop a lot of fibres to start with, wool for much much longer.
  • Hoover as frequently as possible with a new carpet. As others have said, it will remove the excess/loose fibre from the manufacturing process.
If you have a twist or velvet carpet, use an upright with a beater bar. If you have a loop carpet, then a suction only cleaner is better as it avoids 'piling'.
