We really stand for everything don't we. I was under the completely false impression that doing away with the tax disc was just a way of saving money and trees - excellent! Now I know that after I've taxed my car today, should I decide to sell it on the 4th October, I can't sell it as before 'taxed for a year' I have to reclaim my tax (because only full months are refunded) from the 1st November  Therefore I lose almost one months money that I have paid. The person buying my car has to apparently tax the car him/herself before they can drive it away - from the 1st of the month that I have already paid for and lost!!(easier said than done if it's a Sunday and they're not mobile/computer savvy and the post offices are shut).
Who's making money out of this then, we don't need three guesses??

Where do you think the money goes then, down some rabbit hole?0

I completely agree - it's a rip-off.
Many folks saw that right away - but there is nothing we can do about it, is there.
One slight error in your post - you don't have to claim back the whole months left - it's all done automatically as soon as the ownership is transferred.
Which raises the next question - at precisely what point does that occur?
When the new owner drives off?
When the DVLA receive the V5C bits in the post?
I can't believe that it can all be done simply and cheaply by phone or internet - without any hiccups.
I have little faith in any gov.uk computer set-up.0 -
"They" will lose more money than they "Gain" as it will now be easier to avoid getting caught, & when all thos DDs start "Bouncing" due to lack of funds.0

Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn.0

If the sellers final, part of the month, tax, remained with the car when it was sold this would give buyers time to tax the car and end the dual payment, rip off complaints.0

I agree, and started to think that maybe this could be done in some way 'privately' between seller and buyer - but after reading Iceweasel's reply it appears not.The important things in life are not things ........0 -
It's another argument in favour of clean cars... My tax is £30 a year (for now, I'm sure it'll go up soon but that's another issue) so a month's tax is £2.50. I can afford to lose that if I change the car0

If I bought a car with no on it on the 4th of the month, I'd always have had to tax it from the start of the month.
If I sold a car on the 4th of the month and was cashing in the tax myself, as I would normally do, I'd have lost that month anyway.
If I buy a car, I'm pretty sure it will stay showing taxed on the system long enough for me to get it home, have a cup of tea, go online or walk down to the post office and take out the next lot of tax.0 -

Yes I can see your point, but we're not all fortunate enough to be in that situation - also even if it is a small amount of money that doesn't make it right. The important things in life are not things ........0 -
Sounds like a logical progression since the advent of ANPR and insurance/tax/mot databases, and this model could self fund the whole program, if that is the case I am impressed.
Although my wallet won't be too impressed but hey ho I have bigger concerns that deserve my wrath.0
