Plan on making a broth in my new slow cooker
In my freezer i have gamon slices which I was just gonna use, however i've got a bacon joint too. The type thats on the bone.
Now my question is, how do I cook it? I have a feeling i just boil it but i have no idea how long for and when i should put it into the broth.
Usually i just make broth in a big pan with bacon pieces or gamon slices

I boil in a large pan with onion ( skin and all, just quartered ) celery, carrots, peppercorns, apple , bay leaf
If it's been frozen it will possibly be quite salty so leave to soak over night first, or bring to the boil in fresh water and discard before hand
I boil for 20 mins a pound plus 20min
When cool enough to handle I then cover with mustard and brown sugar and let it glaze in the oven
The stock I stain, leave to cool before skimming off the fat. That's my soup base. I add lentils, boil till soft, blitz and then add the left over bacon scraps0 -

You can cook it in your slow cooker too - I just bung mine in with enough water to come up half way, a shake of black pepper and leave it for around 5/8 hours....depending on when I remember it!"Start every day off with a smile and get it over with" - W. C. Field.0

I always do mine in the slow cooker then make broth. Cover it in water and leave it to do its thing (4 hours high, 8 hours low for a typical £5 one).
Eat the bacon (save some), and when the stock cools (freeze most it in approx half pints) skim it and use that as stock with some soaked broth/soup mix and root veg/onion/etc. Throw a bit of the bacon back in with a sprig of time and some pepper and you have a fabulous hearty broth.
Better than the original meal - we do this just so we can have the broth lolProgress not perfection.

I make mine in slow cooker also, and throw in the indigence for my soup also so I kill two birds with one gammon joint so to speak.
Once the joint it ready I take it out of the soup and cut it up and put some back into the soup, and make a meal from the rest.
Make a great soup.0
