Is Atlantic City anything like Vegas? Anyone been?

Been to Vegas a few times now and LOVE it, but- Im trying to talk the other half into trying somewhere new next year.

As we both love Vegas Im looking for something similar (if there is such a thing) and wondered if Atlantic City would be an option.

Anyone have any experience please?

  • There was a thread on Atlanta City in the last week or so and a few people said they'd been and gave their opinion.

Its not to the scale or glitz but there are some fair sized casinos still (and a fair few of closed ones

why go anywhere else....as you say, you love Vegas, there is no where else like it and you would constantly compare and be disappointed

Wow, thank you for the replies. Wont be doing that then!!!!!!

It was just because the other half is disabled and needs a mobility scooter to get around so the last time we found it easier just to stick to the strip and in Vegas and I just feel we've seen what we want to see in all the well known hotel/casinos so wondered if there was a viable alternative in a similar vein but with new places to visit.

Much smaller and less "glamorous" than Las Vegas and lack of investment has left it rather tired. That said, depending on the time of year you visit, it has it's plus points such as the wide beach and weekend entertainment. It is also much more compact than Las Vegas and if you select your hotel well this might help you given your OHs mobility issues. Tax Free shopping and I also found generally much cheaper food options are other plus points.

Cheap flights to either Newark and a two hour drive down, or into Philly and one hour down the expressway, make it much more affordable that Vegas can be. You could also consider as a multicentre trip. Stay in New York at the weekend (when slightly cheaper good quality hotels around the financial district can be found), express coach down to Atlantic City (or drive), for a few days in AC. You can also use Atlantic City to explore the surrounding countryside, vineyards and into Philadelphia to explore that City.

I was brought up about 1/2 hour from AC (in fact my BIL was the governor that brought in the gambling laws). It's a homely town, not as glitzy as Vegas, the casinos have designated smoking only areas, the dining options are cheaper, but you will find room prices higher in general.
The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.

we last went 11 years ago and I know things have changed...but as a side trip for a few nights from NYC we enjoyed it...we love Vegas and wouldn't choose it over Vegas, ever...but if Vegas wasn't an option we might try it again - but unlikely to consider it for more than a couple of nights as part of something else.

Unfortunately I do not think there is anywhere like Vegas...it's why we go through the whole maybe we should try something new? regularly and end up going back to Vegas...as we are pretty sure we will spend the whole time thinking 'it's not as good as Vegas'. :)

How about Reno and/or Lake Tahoe? The lake is very scenic but I can't comment on the gambling and entertainment aspects of the area.
