Mobile phone towers can only handle so much traffic so in Large cities your mobile signal will be terrible during business hours when a few million people are trying to use the 30, 40 or so mobile masts in the city centre ^__^

That's why the outskirts of a city usually has better mobile signal than the centre.

Also Three just brough out an an voip app "Three InTouch" which routes your phones mobile voice and sms via your WiFi (Or MiFi if that has a better signal than your phone!) Which is useful for me, I live about 300 yards from a Three mast but the flat i'm in is over 100 years old and has nearly 2 foot thick stone (not clay brick) walls, so my mobile signals is next to nothing unless it's by the window!

Also your local bus service is usually using something like a MiFi for internet connection so it's only as good as the network it's on. So mileage may vary as to the usefulness.

Ahh the days of a my first 9,600 modem then getting the fast 32,000 modem and finally a few years of a 56k modem before ADSL came to my area...

And please, don't even start with the ;you should be grateful! When I were a lad...' stuff. I'm old enough to have once relied on push-button phone boxes.

The earlier ones had a true dial at the top to dial up the digits with as of course did all domestic phones which in those days compulsorily came from the GPO and were included in your bill as rent for the phone instrument.
