After many years loyal service I've ditched my Blackberry for a Motorola Moto g. A few questions:
- Is there an App to measure my data usage?
- Do I have to have a google account to get apps?
- For contacts it's linking to my hotmail account. Can I specify a different contact list?

#contacts
#menu (looks like ithe the key on the bottom right of a moto g
#contacts to display
Then select if you want to see contacts from Device/SIM/email account(s)/Whats app etc
Hope this helps0 -
Been playing with and how can I get notifications on the lock screen for SMS. Just an envelope with number of messages etc. like on Iphone? Do I have to use an app? If so any recommendations for an app as searching the store there is quite a choice!

The lock screen should show you that you have received one or more SMS messages (also emails and missed calls) by default, but it doesn't tell you how many. That's in Android 4.4.4, but I'm pretty sure it's been exactly the same in versions going back as far as Froyo in 2010.
Whether there is an app that would do that I don't know, but I can't really see the point, are you more likely to look at messages if you've received 3 than if you've got 1? Why not just look however many there are?0 -
The lock screen doesn't show me SMS only an envelope so I have to check email/SMS. I just want to discreetly look quickly at my phone throughout the day and see if I've had a text. Same at night, want it to be obvious as I have people who would contact me late at night and I would need specs to see envelope

Motorola must have done something in it's shell then as native Android will definitely show you a text message symbol. Have you actually looked in the Play Store to see if there's something that will do what you want?0

Yep and a bit of choice and I went for one but got nervous when it said it would read my texts!!!! As I might text DD or OH confidential info wasn't keen on this!

AFAIK android has a built in ability to measure data usage - the info can be found under the settings menu.0
