Refurbished laptops/notebooks worth the risk

  • Find this hard to believe. If it had a dent, it would be sold as 'Scratch & Dent'.
Perhaps you didn't buy it from DELL after all....or maybe you didn't read the description.

Why is it hard to believe? They sold it as refurbished not as scratch and dent, yet when I received it there was a dent just below the monitor - it was an all in one. It was for that reason they paid the return postage.

It is down to luck, but I can say with certainty that they do not have a good system of testing computers. The laptop I had off them had a space key that was obviously faulty.

SVP has some decent Lenovo i5 Thinkpads for around the £200 mark, they are not gonna win any bonny baby contests but for the money they are decent machines.

Is there anything special about these laptops? I have seen a few laptops from Curry and Argos that are fairly cheap for i5s so the prices of i5s are falling but I've never used a thinkpad. I have been told they are solid, but the battery life is apparently not great.

Good then that they gave a full refund.

The second paragraph in your original post didn't make any sense at all.

They are built for business users, built like tanks, spares easy to find and repairable by any competent engineer. They have a great reputation for being tough and have a great build quality when compared to you average budget machine. There is a reason they hold their value.

They don't hold their value. :)

    No...they don't.

Paying £100 to £200 for a business machine that cost £1000 is hardly indicative of holding it's value.

I paid £240 for my 'cheapy' Toshiba. Now more than five years old, I could get perhaps £70 to £100 for it.

So which holds it value best?

I won't argue about the quality of construction, but the holding of value argument doesn't wash. ;)

    Wow. Good observation there. :T
