no garage door key

Can you confirm or deny that there is other access to the garage, please, because I'm bloody confused!
If there isn't any other access, then there could be just about anything in there, from a pit of crocodiles to decomposing corpses to long-forgotten gold bars.
If there is other access, then the most likely thing they're hiding can be that the door falls off the runners if you try to open it.0 -
I think the door mechanism must be faulty. Either the cables have twisted/broken or the door is not aligned on the runners. They might keep it shut for security in that if you can open in about 18 inches someone could have easy access to the house and rob it. In my experience you cannot close them easily when they are faulty.
Be prepared to pay for a new door or to fix the old mechanism and take it off the price. That is what I would do.0 -
Agree door is likely to be faulty, and I'd assume it was. I'd therefore explain to agent that, as vendor refused chance to test, I'd knock 750 quid off price. They can negotiate that down a bit, and keep their honour satisfied that way.... or find a key/change the lock for twenty quid, and save the lot..... Unless....
Unless, like this house I'm in, the drive was laid on top of the old drive.... so, for the doors to open here, the whole drive had to be replaced at the right level. I was expecting this, so no problem, but I've always wondered how delighted our vendors must have been with their lovely shiny tarmac drive ... until they tried opening their garage doors!0 -
If it's just falling off the runners, it's not necessarily needing to be replaced. The garage door at our old place had had a sulk - one side's spring had gone ping, and it was popping out at that side.
A specialist garage door repairer came round, sorted it to better than it'd ever been - it fair glided up'n'down - and all for less than a hundred quid.0 -
I think we are all guessing. If the house is priced more than fairly, the owner may reflect that in their attitude.
It was thus when we bought. The built-in oven blew up between exchange & completion, but the seller's attitude was, "That's just hard luck."
We agreed. No point in stressing over something we could replace for £50 on ebay.
When we moved in, we found the lack of an oven more than compensated-for by expensive items that had been left behind.0 -
I had one where it jumped off the runner and a cable unwound itself, fixed it in 15 minutes, it cost me nowt.
Not sure why everyone's decided the door must be faulty just because the vendor can't find the key, maybe they never opened it. Anyway it's easy enough to check when there's access through another door . . .0
