You will see multiple users of JL products as with any other store who have actually damaged the goods and expect free repairs .
Asda tried the no question asked policy on returned electrical goods a few years ago . It lasted less than a year due to customer abuse .
Computing items had 2 years from donkeys years ago. that extended to all electricals in october 2013.
As for why they wouldn't pay for something so far outside of its warranty? Losing money. No business is a charity. If you can prove liability under the SOGA, you're sorted. If not, no company that wants to stay in business will pay so much for an out of warranty repair. Sadly, being nice is what puts companies out of business in these tough times.0 -
Thanks for all the replies, it's been really interesting! I hadn't seen this as an instance of 'being nice', I was looking at more that an iPod costing £329 and used very carefully 4 or 5 times a week should last longer than 21 months.
I felt that Apple agreed when they nearly replaced it, but I doubt they will give a formal statement against a major retailer.
Guess next time I'll shop somewhere (or instruct my wife to) with a decent warranty0 -

I think the problem here is that you've gone in concentrating solely on what warranty rights you have and JL have correctly told you that the warranty doesn't apply. Forget the warranty and use the SOGA.0 -

Does anywhere else offer 2 year warranties on apple stuff? The nice thing about the apple store is that apple makes the stuff so if it's outside of warranty, it's in their interest to keep you within the apple environment so they have your personal details and have you locked into the app store etc. Plus, as the manufacturer, the cost to them for repairs/replacements is a lot smaller so it's better business sense to them to replace.
For other retailers, it's different and a lot more costly, so expecting an out of warranty repair out of goodwill is asking a lot. That being said, you still have the SOGA if indeed you can prove that it didn't last a reasonable length of time.0
