Easyjet was delayed returning to London from Basel by about 2 hours. My car rental company imposed a 75GBP penalty on the rental as directly as a result of the delay I had to collect my car an hour and a half out of the collection time and the company's official closing time. Easyjet said that I need insurance inorder to claim for this. what's my position? Thank you.

You position is that your contract with Easyjet ends when they get you to the airport you were booked to travel to; any subsequent travel, buses, trains, car hire etc is not their responsibility as it a separate contract.
There is no EU compensation from the airline for any delay under 3 hours.
I doubt that an insurance policy would have covered this really - it sounds like they were due to close 30 mins after your arrival time which was always going to be risky0
