LG dvd-writer

I borrowed an external lg dvd writer (LG GSA-E40N) from a friend.
The problem is that after plugging it in, it will not recognise any blank medias (cd+/-R, DVD+/-r). It plays dvds, cds but it will not recognise the blanks.
It works fine on my friends computer, it recognises blanks.
I did the firmware upgrade from the lg site, but still will not recognise them.
Any Ideas?
Thank you for time.

That's really weird.. Are you using the same blanks as your friend used, or a different brand?0

What software are you using to burn the discs?
I only ask because i have an internal lg writer which used to only recognise blank discs when using burning software such as nero, if i tried to use XP to burn the disc or windows media player, it would not detect that a blank disc was in the drive and would ask repeatedly for a blank disc to be inserted!
After a few days of frustration i realised that it was InCD that was causing the problems. Once i uninstalled that and restarted the computer, blank discs were recognised straight away.
