I've had my present car for 14 months and in that time I've driven 33670km and bought 1,993 litres of diesel.

That works out at 5.74 l/100km

For those still using furlongs and yards of ale - that's equal to driving 20992 miles and using 425 gallons which is 49.2mpg

I'm very happy with that.

The official fuel consumption quoted for my car says the combined figure is 53.3mpg.

Without keeping a written record I'd be way off with my estimates of how much fuel I was using.

Smaller engines use less fuel in slow moving city traffic but at higher speeds a bigger engine maybe more efficient.

I have a Mondeo Estate 2L diesel. at 70mph i can be averaging 60mpg+
My sisters megane used more fuel on a blast up the motorway when she followed me a while back.

You may not be using the car to its best potential. It used to be said change up the gears as soon as possible for best economy. But a cars gearing has got much taller since then.
6th gear in my car only starts to give better economy that 5th when your close to motorway speeds.

It will pull 50mph in 6th gear fine but actually uses more fuel than 5th gear.
