Niggling Worry

hi guys,

a recent FTB - this forum was a god send when it came to mortgage (and lord knows what else) advice.

we have moved in (it's been 10 weeks) and the house is going really well. We've been able to carry out cosmetic improvements and it's starting to take shape really well.

The problem I have, is that I am pretty worried when we are away from the house. The area is nice enough, and in the park nearby, you get a mix of families and dog owners enjoying the facilities. However, near to the house is a permanent campsite for travelling families. although they seem to keep themselves to themselves, you do get the odd kid causing noise etc as they walk by. You don't ever seem to see an adult - I assume they drive everywhere.

There isn't any reported crime on the property previously and we have a burglar alarm fitted outside - rather visible and and has a flashing light on it.

It is normal to be worried whilst you are away? I guess it's worse as it is my first property....I find myself verging on the paranoid!

Any advice would be great.

  • Everyone keeps themselves to themselves, no reported crime, it's in a nice area...if a few kids making a bit of noise it the most anti-social behaviour in your area then I think you are very lucky indeed!
If you've been there ten weeks and haven't heard a peep out of them then your worries about the travellers site sound pretty needless to be honest.

If you do go away, take the usual precautions. Make sure that your post isn't building up in the letterbox, get a timer switch for lights/radio etc and see if you can get one of your new neighbours to keep an eye on the place. And do make sure that you have proper household insurance which includes the contents of your shed, if you have one.

I live near to a traveller site, which has been here a lot longer than I have. We do have spates of burglaries in the area, as do most London boroughs, but they usually turn out to be a couple of halfwits who live out of the area, chancing their arm in a place where no-one knows them. The travellers here have kids at my son's school, one of them goes to his local gym and they all seem ok. We've had instances where cars have been nicked and then found burnt-out in the local woods but I can't say that it's the traveller children who do this, we have lots of grotty families living locally, who aren't anything to do with travellers!
