Default on Credit Card

Sorry if this has been posted by anyone else in the past but I'm what I think they call a newbie here.
I defaulted on a credit card in Dec 2008 and it was handed to a collection agency. I made arrangements for monthly repayments and was given a settlement figure in August 2009 and cleared the debt. My question is Will my credit rating be clear in December or next August?
I have pretty much stayed on top of things since the default apart from a couple of late payments (just days not months)
Any advice would be gratefully received

It will be removed from your credit file 6 years from the recorded "default date".

  • Thank you for the quick response! I'm so glad that there 's finally light at the end of a very long tunnel

  • I'm in a similar position, and hope it's OK to hijack this thread rather than make a new one!

Credit Card I received in early 2008 and used once, but found the process to pay it off a nightmare for various reasons and let it slip until a collection agency got involved (then I was able to clear it out that day because at least they had a way of me paying it in a single phonecall which my bank didn't seem to be able to do!)

My record showing on CallCredit is as follows

    OCT 08 : OK
    NOV 08 : AA
    DEC 08 : AA
    JAN 09 : BB
    FEB 09 : DF
    ...
    JAN 10 : DF
    FEB 10 : SF

I'm guessing that I won't see any real 'light' at the end of the tunnel until Feb 16, and I have to wait for every single DF to vanish before checks come back more positively? It was a nightmare year, and a £25 spend on a card that I had through my bank (RBS) didn't seem like a big deal then.

The only other issue on my CallCredit file that I can see is AA/AA/BB from O2 last year which was entirely their fault, and I'm going through the process of having it removed and will do another £2 check when they say it's been cleared. I might have had bad marks from Eon back in 09 due to a housemate issue, but I'm not seeing them on CallCredit and don't recall seeing anything on Experian or Equifax when I used them last year. Is there any way of finding that out or is it going to remain an unknown?

    Thanks!
  • It's 6 years from the first default date. The continuing defaults just show the current status. So Feb 2015.
  • Wow, something working in my favour? I actually can't believe it! That's superb news.

I intend on getting a new credit card now - although having been turned down from a Halifax Clarity for now seemingly obvious reasons, if only I knew about the MSE Eligibility Calc this morning, I'm slightly hesitant of putting through another application even on one I'm 80/90% rated on. Hopefully by February I should have a much healthier report, which will make the future a lot easier!

    Thanks for your reply.
  • Hi Voltron, I'm so glad you hijacked my thread and it's been of some use and has put your mind at rest. I knew about the MSE Eligibility and have also received 90% chance of being excerpted but I'm waiting until the New Year before applying for anything. In saying that, once bitten twice shy. We've spent the last 6 years keeping on top of things and have no intention of going down that road again.
    Here's to a happier 2015
  • Ah, believe - any credit card I get won't be for actually borrowing money, it's just to help rebuild (as well as get purchasing protection etc). The only reason I had the first credit card was because my RBS Debit card couldn't be used to purchase from the US and that could - now I have a Visa Debit, that problem went away.

Good luck to yourself as well!
