Council tax ?

hi guys, hope one of you professionals could help me with some odd situation i'm in.

i live with my grandfather who i also care for in my spare time. and he gets pension credits. so we got a letter that we no longer had to pay council tax. (i was on JSA at the time). the tenancy agreement is under my grandfathers name and we live in a council home

so i started working, and my grandfather said we dont need to pay council tax because of his pension credits however i think we do?

right now i am unemployed and not on JSA because i am trying to get my own online business running.

does some one know if i have to pay any council tax? specifically during my previous working period and/or my current situation ? (self-employed)

any help would be appreciated:)

Some info here on non-dependant deducations (you are classed as a non-dependant so this details how much the benefits should have been reduced by - even if you are not working)

Does your grandfather receive Attendance Allowance?

The information is contained in the link given.

You are not liable for council tax. Your grandfather is because he is named on the tenancy agreement.

However, you are classed as a non dependent (an adult living with family)

As such, a non dependent deduction will be taken from your grandfather's council support. The amount taken depends on whether you are working/on benefits/ how much you earn.

So your granddad would have to pay this amount of council tax per week.

The non dependent is expected to give the person who is liable for council tax some money for their keep and this money should cover any money lost on benefits because of your living there.

The same applies to housing benefit.

Your grandfather needs to let the council know when you moved in and what income you have been receiving during this period. You will need evidence of any income in the form of bank statements/pay slips. You will have to pay back anything that is owed (rather your grandfather will but morally you need to pay it)

Each council runs its own council tax scheme. You can google your council website and look for non dependent deduction for council tax to find out the rates.
  • Does your Grandfather receive Attendance Allowance at all? If so there will be no non dep deduction taken.

As your Grandfather is in receipt of Pension Credit any non dep deduction will only start 26 weeks after you start work.
These are my own views and you should seek advice from your local Benefits Department or CAB.
