How much does it cost annually to own a custom car registration number?

I was thinking of going for a custom car registration number however i am not sure how much would it cost annually?

Do we need to by from DVLA or can we buy from other online websites?

Have you got a custom car?

If you want a vanity plate, it won't cost you anything over and above the cost of the number and the transfer fee. You will have to pay the latter whenever you want to move the number from one car to the other.

You can buy from anybody although the DVLA are usually cheaper and the costs more transparent.

if you can buy your plate from the dvla then this is the most cost effective way of doing it, if you see the same plate on another online site for a cheaper price than the DVLA are selling it don't be fooled you will end up paying more for your plate in the long run

Dvla price includes transer fee and one years retention to give you time to get the plate assigned to the car

you can buy plates on the likes of e bay but the if you go down this route check the extra costs that you will have to cover like transfer fees

as for annual costs there is no ongoing annual cost you just have to pay to transfer your plate from one car to another at a rate of £80.00 for the transfer fee
  • The only annual cost is if you don't put the plate on the car - in that case you have to pay the retention fee (£25 last time I looked) every year.

For example if you found a great plate, but it was too new to go on your car (you can't put a plate on a car that would make the car appear to be newer than it actually is), but you thought you'd buy it and keep it ready for when you get a newer car, you would need to renew retention every year until it goes on a car.

As for best source, it depends on what type of plate you're buying. Some are available only from dealers - for example if I had a private plate and wanted to sell it, I wouldn't be able to get the DVLA to sell it for me, only an independent dealer or sell it privately.
  • The bigger cost is transferring it from car to car if you swap a lot.

You can buy one from a man in the pub if you like. Buy a car with a plate attached will cost nothing.

Just make sure you dont have a newer plate than the car.
