No Claims Discount Problems

Hi Guys,

I've been trying to get insured by a couple car insurance companies but I've been having issues with No Claims Discount.

So I chose to renew after Hastings quoted me something like £51 a month. I went to a comparison website and saw that "Allianz Your Cover" was the best.

However, they required I showed proof of my 9 years no claims discount. I was unable to provide proof and they cancelled my policy (but continued to take a couple more payments out of my bank account after the cancellation) which I was unable to reclaim.

So I tried again and thought Churchill seemed good. But yet again, they required proof of my NCD. I rang up Hastings and asked for an evidence letter of my NCD. It came and it didn't seem right to me, but, I sent it anyways.

A couple days ago I received a letter saying the letter I sent was - basically - not what they wanted. They've now raised my premium up to £41.

Where am I going wrong here? I've been driving since I was 17. I'm now 26. I've never claimed or had any accidents! So surely if I've not claimed during the 9 years I've been driving, I should have 9 year no claim discount.

Am I right or am I being foolish?

Any help and a point in the right direction would be very much appreciated.

Thank you!

Normally the renewal notice you receive from your insurer shows your current level of NCD, and that's what your new insurer would want to see. I've never been insured with Hastings so I don't know if that's what they provide though.

You look to have misunderstood what no claim bonus is about.

To have 9 years NCB you need to have held policies for 9 years in your own name and never claimed

Your OP mentions your previous policy got cancelled over this issue

You do need to make sure your current insurer is aware of this

Otherwise when they discover it ( eg after a claim) you give them grounds to void your policy and reject claims or pursue you to reimburse any money paid out to third parties
  • Firstly, did you tell Churchill that you had a policy cancelled? I didnt believe they took on anyone that has?

As others have said, your renewal invite will have contained a schedule that gives your key details including your NCD. This is what most people use to prove their NCD to others.

Alternatively some will write you a letter stating what your NCD was, when I declined to renew with Tesco this year they sent a letter afterwards though Aviva had already accepted my renewal letter as proof of NCD.

No claims discount is not the same as your driving history, you can have multiple claims and still have full NCD, similarly if you have never had insurance in your own name you could be claim free for 50 years and not have any NCD
  • Hi Ryan,

I'm sorry to hear that you have had an issue with your new insurers and that you feel the NCD isn't right. I would like to help clarify your entitlement and see if there is any issue, however it isn't clear from your post how many years is on the letter. There are some situations where you have been driving for 9 years but have not been awarded that many years of NCD. If you would like to email your policy / reg number plus your full name and DOB to help@hastingsdirect.com I can give you all the help you need. Hopefully we can clear up what the problem might be.

    Regards,

    No. For a few reasons:

if you have a policy for a few years, then don't take out a policy for 2-3 years then the accrued NCB is unlikely to be accepted. Most insurers require the NCB to be less than 2 years old. So you would start again.

how many years NCB isn't based on how many years you've been driving - but how many full years you've completed insurance policies.

ncb' can only be used on one policy at a time and cannot be combined. So if you build up say 3 years from back to back policies. Then take out mid-term a second policy building up 2 years on that policy, running both cars you will have 5 years and 2 years built - but you cannot add these and claim to have 7 years NCB. You either run with the 5 years or run with the 2 years built up
