Who can write defaults to my credit file?

Hi,
Last year I signed up to a company offering basic web space for a nominal fee.
I didn't realise that the account would automatically renew and as my card details have changed and their auto - payment failed, they have sold my account to a debt collector.

Although the fee is now about five times what I initially paid for a year I am more worried what effect this could have had on my credit file as I might need to re-mortgage in the near future.

Are companies like this permitted to write to credit files?

Thanks and regards,

That doesnt sound righht at all, surely if your payment bounced they would just cancel your webspace? i know that what would happen with mine.

Is there more to this story as seems strange they sold to a debt collector without asking you for payment first

1&1 or one.com by any chance, its hidden in their terms. They normaly also DO send reminder emails
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.

The operative word is highlighted. Maybe the reminder email ended up in Junk.

I guess if you didn't enter into a credit agreement then it shouldn't affect the CRA's credit files on you.
  • I used to run a business, and one aspect of that business was web hosting. We'd never have contracts, if your payment bounced then you'd be suspended and given 14 days to pay, or we'd terminate the account. I know some companies do insist on a 12 month contract, but it's still very rare. I doubt they have a leg to stand on.
Credit 'Score' - Don't buy the credit 'score' that Experian, Equifax and Noddle want to sell you. It's an arbitrary number that means nothing when it comes to applying for credit.

ALWAYS HAVE A DIRECT DEBIT SET UP FOR THE MINIMUM PAYMENT ON YOUR CREDIT CARDS, REGARDLESS OF WHETHER YOU PLAN TO LOGIN AND PAY EACH MONTH.

    Hi morphy

You would have to have given your consent for information to be shared with credit reference agencies, so please refer to the terms of whatever agreement you signed at the outset.

Please note that this would definitely affect your credit file if they ended up suing you for the money and you were unable to dispute it/clear it promptly.

  • Thanks for replies. It is one.com, their reminder emails did end up in my junk box but luckily the debt collector email did not.

I cant find mention of sharing information with credit agencies, at least no words relating to it show up in search
